Meet The Centred Team

Kevin

Kevin

Chief Meditation Officer, Co-Founder

I’m continually surprised by the frequency that people ask me how I’m able to remain so calm and patient, even under the most trying of circumstances. Each time I hear this, I think back a few years to when my father sat me down and told me that my frantic “successful” lifestyle would lead to an early heart attack. Centred Meditation was founded to help urban professionals thrive in a world of ‘busy’, where long hours, deadlines, poor sleep, lunch on the run (if you’re lucky) and relationship woes are the norm. Fierce competition, doing more with less, getting ahead. Sound familiar? Have you asked yourself what is the real cost of your success? I have discovered that within this urban jungle, you can establish a sustainable lifestyle where real productivity, confidence, clarity and peace of mind is the new norm. A reality where anxiety, unhealthy fear and insignificance does not exist. A place where you can be a better version of yourself with each day that passes.

Ironically, it was in my final year of Psychology at University that I experienced first-hand the raw, visceral effect of pressure and stress on my physiology and I decided I was sick of sabotaging my health for a certain outcome that may never actually eventuate. I had heard about meditation before but it had always seemed too difficult to still my chaotic mind. I gave it a go and began meditating regularly, immediately discovering the profound effects that it had on all aspects of my life: study, work, relationships, health. I’m still meditating and I genuinely believe that the world would be a much better place if everyone incorporated a mind stress relief technique into their lives. It’s obvious for us to exercise, eat healthy, and clean our bodies, but when do we ever stop and clear out the junk in our mind?

Meditation has taught me invaluable lessons about myself, others, and our existence. For 5 years, I worked in a job that was very high pressure and wasn’t in line with who I was.  I was ‘successful’ in the modern meaning of the word, but my mental and physical state were anything but. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the onset of a common auto-immune disease.  I had been trying to find an outlet and found that my happy place was in meditation and yoga.  This was a brilliant concept compared to my process at the time which was that I could reason, plan, and ultimately control everything if I thought hard enough about it.  The concept of letting go, and releasing control helped me to blossom into a calmer, happier, and more open person.  I now practice regularly and lovingly refer to meditation as “my meds.”

My interest in meditation started in my early 20’s when the stress of my job impacted greatly on my health. My whole life very quickly began to improve since I began to meditate. From my career, health, energy levels, sleep, relationships and the most important thing of all, my happiness. The benefits inspired my drive for greater self development and knowledge. It led me to study Ayurveda (the oldest health science for keeping the mind and body balanced and free of toxins) and train in India, the birthplace of it all. I now enjoy practicing both meditation and Ayurveda, writing about it (I am also a journalist) and sharing this knowledge with the wider community.

I became fascinated with my mind the moment I realised I made my living with it. My mental capacities for creative problem solving have been useful during my career in software development and academia. I’ve also experienced first-hand what happens when it stops working properly. The tendency for those capacities to be negatively impacted during the periods of excessive stress and anxiety I experienced during my twenties led me to explore meditation as a solution – thankfully I’ve found it works remarkably well to maintain balance and harmony in my inner world.

I’m always grateful to have the opportunity to sit and share what I’ve learned about meditation over the years. I started teaching informally a number of years ago, running twice-weekly groups at my workplace as a way to keep focused on my own practice. Since then, I’ve been lucky to work with a variety of audiences. I’m always astonished how quickly meditation can make a difference – often one or two sessions with good instruction are enough to help anyone see the benefits!

The studio is a friendly and tranquil space in the city where you always feel welcomed by Nikki and Kevin, it smells amazing and is a safe comfortable place to relax whilst enjoying a fresh tea and some much needed quiet time. Practicing meditation has given me more clarity of mind and control over emotions. The challenges and stresses of daily life are still there but I feel more equipped to deal with them and more able to take a step back which has helped me in both my professional and personal life.

A high profile role in an extremely high performance world places stresses on our mind and spirit in ways we can not readily recognise. Guided and centred meditation has created the mind space for me to ground myself in the harmony and balance which comes from our inner peace and strength. Since coming to the mind and body sanctuary in the Centred Meditation facilities, I have seen my blood pressure drop by 15 points and experienced the heightened  clarity of purpose in my professional and personal life. Kevin, Nikki and Nadya are extremely well-suited to match the guided sessions with the energy in the room in ways which makes you feel like you are the only student in attendance. The results have been significant to me personally and people who matter in my world.
